We are continually seeing unregistered builders/tradesmen engaging themselves in unlicensed building works. Before you go ahead with a builder, check if they are registered and check the registered builder data base.

It is required by law that any building project over $20,000 has to be done by a registered builder and not an unlicensed contractor calling themselves a builder. 

Unregistered builders are not covered by insurance to protect you and your home. These people will persuade you to take out an owner builder license’s and tell you this is the only way to save yourself money and do it cheaper than employing a registered builder.

This is most prevalent in the larger building works which entail hundreds of thousands of dollars where the risks are greatest,  often costing the owner builder more in shonky tradesmen  and being more than what it should cost in the end.
